If you are not a New Zealand citizen or resident but looking to buy property in New Zealand, for the majority of properties, there will not be any restrictions from you doing so.

Certain types of properties however are subject to the laws set out in the Overseas Investment Act. If you are looking to purchase property or a business in New Zealand and you are not a citizen or resident, it is important that you contact us to assist you very early in the process to check that any prospective property (or business investment) you are considering is not subject to the restrictions set out in the Overseas Investment Act.

Other factors may also need special consideration. Extra time may be required to ensure that necessary documentation can be signed and obtaining finance from a New Zealand-based bank may be a more difficult process, depending on your level of connection of NZ and any other factors that a bank deems relevant.

New Zealanders Overseas

If you are a New Zealander based outside of New Zealand either permanently or temporarily, whilst you will not be subject to Overseas Investment Act requirements, your location may make the process of buying property slightly more challenging due to the logistics involved of signing documentation and for the same reasons set out in the previous paragraph relating to your level of connection with New Zealand.
